Song6 - Heart of Darkness

Tuning - DADGA#D

Most of my songs this year have been approached from writing words first and fitting music, which is a bit unusual for me. This is one where I found the chord progression and liked it and couldn't put anything to it. I finally stumbled on the first 2 lines of the chorus. It got me thinking about rationalization. Like, did the first person to make someone a slave tell himself, "oh, it's allright, because they don't look like you" or "they're not from around here" or did they just have no conscience. This reminded me of a character in a book I'm writing, so I turned the song toward him... sorta. I also wrote the next song (which will be coming hopefully tommorow) which is about guilt, about this character.

This is another spare one with just 1 vocal, 1 guitar and a bass. My voice is starting to give out in places and apparently so are my fingers... please forgive the warts (as usual).

LYRICS

Heart of Darkness

Now or never, the stage is set
and here the circumstances let
you make a choice and take the bet
it won't be so bad this time

The voice inside your ear
is screaming out loud and clear
but you wont turn and you won't fear
it won't be so bad this time

into the heart of darkness
tell yourself the lie
I won't keep the stains
I've got my alibi
till you've gone

Much to gain, none to lose
all the same whatever you chose
worst you'll get is maybe a bruise
it won't be so bad this time

no one's around, none will know
just a quick decisive blow
noone will be hurt that I know
it won't be so bad this time

Punishment will fit the crime
you'll sell your soul one piece at a time
like loose change, nickel and dime
till you're gone
till you're gone

Into the heart of darkness
tell yourself the lie
I won't keep the stains
I'll get by
until you're gone...
