ABOUT

Song9 - Remnant

I posted 3 songs at one shot to play catchup. I won't bore you with the details of why I was so far behind (Migraine+Cold+Stomach Flu). I posted them in descending (in quality) order.

I came up with the idea for this song seeing Burr's song that had a single chord throughout. I decided I wanted to do a song with a single note droning througout, in the upper register. I mentioned it to Burr and he pulled out his Magic Banjo and started playing a repetitive droning D. I found a finger picked progression I really liked and kept it.

When I got back home and recorded this, I used mandolin, since i didn't have a banjo. It built from there. I could easily happily spend several weeks (months?) playing with this one, adding stuff, tweaking, and so on.

The first line of the chorus was originally the only lyrics I had, but for the verse. I then thought about the whole non-lit "list" idea and it grew from there.

This is dedicated to anyone who has felt that loss whether from death, divorce, or what have you.

LYRICS

Remnant

A cold home
where echoes roam
static clock beats
time of its own

old photograph
torn in half
an empty shelf
an empty laugh

(chorus)
she's not alone
though that's how it seems
the heart remains
if only in her dreams

an old shirt
too much dessert
an empty place
a nameless hurt

some time alone
to call her own
some crimes are best
left unknown

(chorus)

an old house
no need to roam
where love dwells
is always a home
