Ought To (w/ Scott O. Clamp)

Liner Notes:

Scott’s notes: Eric sent me this great set of lyrics for a collaboration, and immediately I imagined screeching guitars, cacophonous drumming, and screaming vocals. I pitched this to Eric, and he was up for it. I tried putting something noisy together, and it sounded unbelievably stupid. I really didn’t want to do that to Eric’s song.

So, I took out an effects pedal and tried to make a spare homage to the 4AD tapes I wore out as a teenager and young adult (This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins, Pale Saints, and His Name is Alive among others). I didn’t really manage that either, but it’s less embarrassing than the previous attempt.

Though I’m sure the result surprised Eric (who was expecting a screaming noisefest), he gamely recorded a cool bass part for it, and cemented his reputation as an EXTREMELY open-minded collaborator. Thanks, Eric!

Eric’s Note: This is the cool thing about collaborations. I sent Scott a set of on-the-surface bitter lyrics and he found new nuances in the lines, transforming it into a gentle remonstration, a resigned thank-you that I could never capture. Besides, I dig the vibe. smile Thanks, Scott!
Lyrics:

I’ve got no patience for “ought to”
I’ve got no storehouse for “you should”
I already know this bit is hell
I would change it all if I could

A book of clever sayings on your hip
A plastic pouch of wisdom at your side
You know the answer to the world
And no way you can keep it inside

I know you mean well
and thanks for the thought
but you’re not going to fix this
with the words “you ought”

The path ahead of me is clear
but your finger’s stuck in the way
The move in the game I must make
is not yours to play

I’ve got no patience for “ought to”
I’ve got no storehouse for “you should”
I already know
In ways you never could

They say that free advice
is often not worth the price
